How to Style: Culottes

Fashion Looks

What are Culottes?

Culottes is a word which refers to an item of clothing worn on the bottom half of the body, it has multiple meanings and can refer to split skirts, historical men’s breeches or women’s underpants. Source: Wikipedia

The ones I’m talking about are more modern, a split or bifurcated skirt or any garment that hangs like a skirt but is actually pants. Source: Wikipedia The beauty of this piece is it essentially a two-in-one garment, you have the flow and movement of a skirt with the security and comfort of pants.

It was love at first sight.

As soon as I saw this pair at Forever 21, I was instantly attracted to the style, pattern and colour. These are easy to style, they can be dressed up or down; sneakers, pumps, boots, wedges all work beautifully with the cropped length. As for tops, you could do a simple t-shirt or a button-down shirt tucked in, then topped with a denim or leather jacket. Another option I hope to try would be a body suit with a kimono over-top.

Choose your colours wisely.

The color palette for this look was simple, brown, black and white with gold details. With patterns it is best to keep it to 2-3 different colors in the look. In order to have continuity, I like to repeat each color at least once or twice in the outfit. In this look I opted for a white t-shirt with gold writing over the brown with white polka dot culottes. I then topped it with a black leather jacket from Vero Moda, my black and gold Berg + Betts watch, gold and white Geox sneakers and my vintage Gucci bag (this bag is not brown, black or white but it’s beige which is similar enough to brown so I felt it worked).

Don’t forget the details.

The rest of the look was pretty simple, a gold bracelet from Love Montreal Jewelry, my sterling silver Tiffany’s earrings, a vintage gold with pearl necklace and my Kam Dhillon glasses. The final details for this look included a simple up-do, natural eye makeup and a bold, dark lip colour. The most important thing to remember when wearing any look is to wear it confidently. In the past I may have been too timid to wear a look like this or even culottes for that matter. Style is a very personal thing and being true to yourself, your instincts and your comfort are paramount in expressing yourself through fashion.
